Mitsubishi Electric has announced that the company has achieved the main objectives of its environmental sustainability Vision 2021, introduced in 2007. The company has thus contributed to building a more sustainable, low-carbon world by increasingly embracing recycling and harmony with nature. The guiding principles of this programme were to support People and Earth, with initiatives, both technological and diverse, up to and including 2021, the year in which Mitsubishi Electric celebrated its 100th anniversary.
One of the most significant results is the reduction in greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions: the company has achieved a 36% reduction in emissions generated during the use of its products compared to the 2001 level. This has been possible thanks to technological innovations and the development of energy-efficient products. Mitsubishi Electric's investment in energy conservation at each of its manufacturing sites has also resulted in a 56% reduction in CO2 emissions from manufacturing activities compared to the 1991 level. Both figures exceed the initial target of 30%.
By reducing the size and weight of its products, Mitsubishi Electric has reduced its resource requirements by an average of 43% across 64 product groups compared to 2001, significantly exceeding its original target of 30%. In addition, water consumption per sales unit was reduced by 20% compared to 2011, doubling the original target of 10% (1% per year).
Mitsubishi Electric then upgraded its plastic recycling technology to expand its closed-loop recycling, in which plastic collected from household appliances is reused in those manufactured by the company. As a result, the company has also increased the ratio of recycled mixed plastic to high-purity plastic in the recycling of household appliances from 6% in 2011 to 80%.
Mitsubishi Electric is now working to achieve the goals of its new long-term environmental sustainability programme, Vision 2050, through which the company aims to create added value and contribute to an increasingly sustainable world through diverse environmental initiatives including decarbonisation.
